Extinction - be kind to the environment while traveling

Extinction - be kind to the environment while traveling
06.05.2019

According to scientists three bird species went extinct in 2018. While 2018 didn't see vast amounts of wildlife extinction, the Earth is losing animal species well over the natural rate. Animal and other wildlife extinction is raising growing concern around the globe, as industry driven habitat loss (deforestation, mining, and carbon dioxide-emissions), introduction of exotic spieces and global warming cause more and more spieces of wildlife disappear from the face of the earth. Frogs and insects are dying off at alarming record rates, animal species are experiencing so called biological annihilation.

In May 2019, the United Nations will release an 1,800-page assessment of scientific literature about the state of nature. They indicate that up to 1 million species are threatened with extinction within decades, mostly due to human actions. Every species' extinction can potentially lead to the extinction of others in a related and complex ecological web. Hence, numbers of extinctions are likely to increase rapidly in the coming decades as ecosystems get damaged.

Historically, mass extinctions were caused by events like asteroid strikes, volcanic eruptions, or natural climate shifts. The current crisis is almost entirely caused by humans - by us. In fact, 99 percent of currently threatened species are at risk from human activities.

Traveling the world is a great hobby and experience. But it can leave a devastating footprint on the nature. Small, unintentional, careless acts can contribute to damages to the ecosystem. We urge you to keep the planet clean, do not be wasteful, think what services and products you use and use your common sense while at home or abroad. Small steps count to start a snowball effect towards more environmentally friendly humanity.

Read and share the poem that we wrote to one of Extinction Rebellion events in Estonia. We hope it inspires some people to change even a bit:

A fabulous 2018!

I had a great and fabulous year!
Party, food and drinks. What else is there?
I love my life and Insta selfies,
I gather likes and shiny shellfish!

Sipping Margaritas with some flair,
barbecuing meat and drinking beer.
Enjoying sun and fun, I did truly!
Extinct went the Hawaiian Po´uli.

I need my coffee, strong and sweet,
while strolling down the Rio streets.
Robusta coffee and hot cacao!
Extinction catches Spix's Macaw.

Scooping ice-cream left and right,
not caring about the obesity fight.
Having yoghurt marinated steaks,
Eastern Puma died out of my mistakes.

I look so stunning, I look so pretty,
with all my trinkets I feel so witty!
My necklace? ...it´s from an African safari!
Extinct Northern White Rhino, my darling!

Should I worry or should I care,
that next to go is some silly deer?
Who is to blame? Oh, It´s not me.
It´s more the politicians cup of tea.

I love my cats, I love my dogs.
I have the right to... not save all!
I want my stuff to be of Rhino leather,
so let the poachers just shoot better!

My iPhone package, it´s just fantastic!
I should not care, it´s out of plastic!
Even if there will be less spices of dolphins,
I´m a good person, my FB has pics with African orphans.

I might change... would I... could I?
Can it help the world, thus should I?
If I change a bit and affect my friends?
Will it influence how all this ends?

Be the change you want from others,
help educate who can´t be bothered.
Collective mind can create great shifts.
Let your child enjoy the natures´ gifts.
