Very few tourists know about Parque da Catacumba. It's an ideal place to walk around and enjoy nature and tranquility. The lower part of the park reminds an open-air museum featuring dozens of art sculptures. In the upper part, after about 20-minute walk, you'll reach two viewpoints - Mirante da Sacopa and Morro do Urubu that offer awesome views of the Christ, Lagoa and Ipanema. From above you are able to see every detail of the Lagoa neighborhood.
Hidden almost in the middle of Zona Sul is a nice and easy hike for everyone to enjoy. If you are not a big trekking fan, then this is the perfect trail for you – centrally located, short and effortless, and still offers great views. At the viewpoints you can read interesting info boards about the area and the Lagoa. At the base of the hill there is also an adventure park where you can climb along the treeline completing different obstacles.
Parque da Catacumba (Catacomb Park) is an ecological reserve near Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas.
According to a legend, Parque da Catacumba was used as a cemetery, where the Indians buried their dead before the arrival of the Portuguese to Brazil.
In the early twentieth century, the place was known as Chacara the Catacomb and belonged to the baroness of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, who later left her lands to her ex-slaves. In 1940s, with arrival of numerous immigrants, the place turned into a favela. By 1970 the slum was removed and turned into a park through reforestation program.
