Palácio do Catete - luxurious palace museum
Probably won't be too exciting for most of the people, unless you are keen on history. Anyway, you could give it a try on a rainy day and combine your visit with some other attractions nearby. You will be amazed by its large halls full of luxurious decorations, furniture and rare collections of art.
I´m not a big fan of palaces, this being one of them. If you are, then go for it! Otherwise it’s a site to visit while in the neighborhood or nothing else to do. Nevertheless, you cannot deny the beautiful inner décor of the palace.
Palacio do Catete is a luxurios urban mansion built in 1960s and located in Catete neighborhood. Initially it was a family residence of Baron of Nova Friburgo. Between 1897 and 1960 the palace was the seat of the Federal Government.
Catete palace is especially known as the place where Brazilian politician Getulio Vargas committed suicide in 1954. Vargas was the leader of the country during 18 years, first as dictator and then as president. A very interesting and controversial figure in Brazilian history, beloved and hated by tens of millions. Launched in 2014, biographical drama “Getúlio” shows final moments of his life. Read more about the movie on wikipedia.
Nowadays Catete palace is home to Republican museum. Besides the palace, the territory of Museu da Republica includes a big picturesque garden, an art gallery with temporary expositions, a cinema, a cafe, a bistro, a children playground and a bookstore.
