Pedra do Pontal - the rock island that unites and divides beaches
Another not so well-known but really awesome place. You will have a serious workout while climbing Pontal Rock and an unbelievable view of Rio from a different angle. Even if you don't make it up to the top like me (it gets quite steep in the end where you have to use a rope to climb up), you will still get the view of a sand triangle in the meeting point of Recreio and Macumba beaches. Just imagine: the most beautiful white sand stretching 8 km to the left and 18 km to the right.
Great small rock island. The coolest thing is its placement between Recreio and Macumba beaches. It stands proudly at the end of a sandy strip which reaches out into the sea, dividing and at the same time uniting the two beaches. On the sand strip one can enjoy both beaches as the waves reach the shore from both sides. You can get to the hill by making your way through ankle-deep water and climb it to the top for beautiful views of the surrounding beaches, including the 18 km long Barra and Recreio beachline.
Located in Recreio neighborhood, Pedra do Pontal is also known as Pontal de Sernambetiba and Pontal Tim Maia. The last name is dedicated to a famous Brazilian singer because of his song “Do Leme ao Pontal”. The rock island divides the sandy oceanfront into two separate beaches - Recreio and Macumba.
Famous Brazilian songwriter Tim Maia has written a song "Do Leme ao Pontal" to signify the continuous beachfront that runs from Leme Rock to Pontal Rock.
